Degree in Philosophy and Letters at the University of Barcelona (1968) and doctor in Medieval History (1974) by this university. Professor of the Department of Medieval History, Paleography and Diplomatics of the University of Barcelona (1970-1993). He has taught at the Istituto Internazionale di Storia Economica “Francesco Datini”, in Prato (Italy), at the Ecole des Hautes Études in Social Sciences, Paris, and at the University of Paris VII. He entered the year 1993 at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, and has been a professor until his retirement in 2007. After that he has been emeritus professor at this university until 2017. He is currently an ICE professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and member of the Institute of Catalan Studies. As a medievalist researcher, he has specialized in social and power history in the High Middle Ages in Catalonia, and has participated as director in the edition of large collections of Catalan medieval sources. Looking for the historical roots of current problems, he has written a long history of world hunger (Catalan edition of 2008 and Spanish edition of 2012).
